I had been looking forward for this movie, with some trepedation, for many years. My first reaction, unfortunately, was not a good one.
The story is slightly different to that of the radio, novel and TV, but that's fine. Douglas Adams always changed things for the different media, as he should. Each media is different and requires that the story be treated differently. But the biggest problem is that the fact that THHGTHG is a comedy seems to has escaped the movie makers. Most of the gags have been dropped, with just a few new ones put in.
Now the cast. 50/50. Stephen Fry was good as the Book, Martin Freeman was decent as ArthurDent, Bill Nighy was wonderful as Slartibartfast and Sam Rockwell was sort of okay as Zaphod (although I personally didn't like the way they handled the two heads). Mos Def just didn't pull off Ford Prefect though. He didn't have the sarcasm in his voice that one might expect. And although Marvin was greatly depressing (Alan Rickman being one of my favourite actors), I thought the voice needing tweeking to make it sound something other than just a voice-over.
The design of the special effects was very good. The Heart of Gold design was refreshingly original. The Vogon's looked great, as did their ships, although the brick-like design was a gag for fans and not explained on screen. The Magrathian planet building scene was spectacular. And the best gag of the film was the Other Persons Point of View gun, especially when Marvin gets hold of it.
All in all it was a nice sci-fi romp, though it didn't feel like Hitch-Hikers.
Rating 6/10
